Y'all I know that when so-called AI generates ridiculous results it's hilarious and I find it as funny as the next guy but I NEED y'all to remember that every single time an AI answer is generated it uses 5x as much energy as a conventional websearch and burns through 10 ml of water. FOR EVERY ANSWER. Each big llm is equal to 300,000 kiligrams of carbon dioxide emissions.
LLMs are killing the environment, and when we generate answers for the lolz we're still contributing to it.
Stop using it. Stop using it for a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. We need to kill it.

The Equality Games
Once every now and then, the Galactic Coalition's Cultural Exchange department holds a large digital competitive event.
Anyone can participate, and to level the playing field, contestants aren't the ones who actually compete, but instead an advanced deep brain scan (or equivalent body part) and an unbiased AI create a digital avatar that represents the individual and autonomously acts within the digital space.
The cognitive capacity of each is analyzed to a near perfect level and a highly complicated algorithm that, honestly, nobody understands, even the AI that built it, then creates this avatar with traits and weaknesses based on an even more incomprehensible set of criteria and internal points system.
To put it simply - the scan identifies nearly every calculable aspect of a person and assigns a point value for each, then uses those points to "buy" the most relevant and appropriate traits from within its list to give the avatar. There are changing costs, negative value "flaws", and prerequisites based on other information from the scan, but basically it is the most convoluted TTRPG character creation ruleset ever devised.
Given the enormous complexity and diversity that individuals from across thousands of races exhibit, until this system was invented, it was thought impossible to have a sort of intergalactic Olympic Games. There were many attempts over the eons, of course, but one factor or another always made it so that someone did not accept the results.
The Equality Games, however, earned respect and acceptance as a valid alternative once the underlying system was demonstrated and people started to play with it. The avatars were made to act autonomously due to how some species had a distinct advantage when manipulating a digital interface, thus bringing up the old arguments yet again.
One curious result of the AI algorithm avatar generator is that it quite frequently created multiple avatars for each person, only the more hive-mind-like species tended to be represented by a singular avatar within the Games. It is theorized, again because nobody can understand how it really works, that most intelligent beings have multiple "personas" i.e. distinct behavior and personalities in certain common situations, primarily a "public" and "private" persona.
In fact, it is most common for everyone to generate about a three to five avatar "team" that represents the one individual. In comparison, if an ant were to get scanned and put in the games, its avatar would be a single incredibly powerful avatar with many deficiencies, but an overwhelming advantage in several disciplines.
When Humans first entered the Games, as expected, they too had teams as avatars. What was not expected, was that these avatars would sometimes work alone instead of together as a team, deliberately not help one another, and even engage in infighting and the sabotage of another "self".
The Humans suggested that it is perhaps because hypocrisy is not uncommon among them. Self destructive tendencies also appear rather frequently. These Humans almost always are themselves surprised by how contradictory their avatar team composition ends up being.
While the Games themselves happened as normal, the Humans overall placed in the top 20% brackets of most competitive challenges, and scattered roughly evenly everywhere else, they then approached us with a most unusual request.
"Give us a copy of this AI algorithm scanner thing. We think this is the most revolutionary therapy and psychological diagnosis device we've come across."
Of course we obliged and helped set up centers in a number of stations and on Earth itself.
Last we heard, some Humans have avatars that are singular nigh-nightmarish monstrosities, while a very tiny fraction have minds so splintered that their avatars are teams of dozens, one time even over a hundred distinct versions of themselves. Then there are even some seemingly regular Humans who broke the scanner - it gave the error: "Only one individual can be scanned at a time."
Upon "fixing" it with a hack, the results for those were unheard of. Two distinct avatars. Not a team of two, but by all accounts, the AI algorithm identified two separate individuals within one mind, each with very little in common with the other. Sometimes there was nothing in common, even their digital visual representation.
The mind is incredibly complex and hard to comprehend. The Human mind, while biologically quite peculiar but not outside the realms of understood evolution, neurologically it seems to hold near limitless diversity, both complimentary, contradictory, and beyond.

Wtf is Lancer and why is it shit (serious question)
lancer is a tabletop roleplaying game made by the guy who drew kill six billion demons and another guy. i wouldn't call it 'shit', necessarily--it's good in a lot of the ways that matter. it's first and foremost a tactical mech combat game and on that level it's incredible. its ruleset is finely tuned, provides great amounts of GM support to make running what might otherwise be overwhelmingly crunchy combat easier, and has a truly stunning and cool level of character customization available. so as a game, i think it's great fun to play and run, genuinely innovative, and a huge step forward for battlemap tactical wargame type TTRPGs in general.
the lore though, kind of sucks. i think it has two clear and overlapping core problems. problem #1 is that it is a utopia as envisioned by a social democrat. it's a world which the text describes as 'post-capitalist' (but there are still evil megacorporations with private armies who own slaves) and 'post-scarcity' (but only in the developed 'core' systems, so. y'know. there's scarcity). at many points in the text they say that Union (the game's main faction) is utopian, throwing around that exact word a bunch of times as well as 'mutual aid' and 'direct action' and the like. but what they describe is just kind of an imperialist Space Sweden with several distinct forms of slavery that constantly expands and uses its Benevolent Imperial Power to intervene on the Backwards Violent Worlds on its outer border but its good because its just trying to bring them UBI.
to show what i mean, here's one of the game's writers¹ talking about how it would be morally wrong for Union to, say, appropriate the property of a private military corporation that also operates as a fascist nation-state:

it's 'revolution' as imagined by the limpest of social democrats. and of course this would honestly be fine, whatever, most sci-fi settings are fundamentally achingly liberal, but the game goes so out of its way to signpost how Radical it is and how Hopeful and Liberationist you're meant to see the setting as
the other core problem is closely related--it feels like the lancer guys put every cool sci-fi idea they had into lancer even when it completely clashes with the core ideas behind it. like, AIs in this settings are callled 'NHPs' (non-human persons) and they're eldritch god-like beings from another dimension who have be kept 'shackled' (lancer's words, not mine!) to keep them as pliant and obedient AI assistants instead of hostile eldritch abominations. this is obviously horrifying and dystopian but it rules, it would be sick fucking worldbuilding for something with the tone of 40k or a one-off doctor who or star trek episode--but as a fundamental technology foundational to what we are supposed to believe is a post-revolutionary society founded on mutual aid and solidarity and blah blah blah it's glaringly dissonant.
bear in mind this is all just going off the rulebook. lancer fans have told me that the supplements and campaign modules fix some of this or contextualise it. but on the other hand communists have told me that they make it worse and i trust the communists more. i leave you with this incredible passage from the game's foreword:

Friendly reminder, generative AI isn’t just stealing from artists and putting them out of jobs, it’s actively killing the environment.
It takes a LOT of power to run AI. A lot of new power plants are getting built just to run chatGPT and other programs. I really don’t care how revolutionary you think it is, or how little you care about artists jobs, it is killing the planet.
I’m really not the best person to go to for reference and if you want to learn more I suggest you look it up. But also I feel like this aspect of generative AI gets glazed over frequently so I’m saying it again

The new emissions created would be comparable to that of putting 15.7 million additional gas-powered cars on the road.
We're in the middle of a climate crisis and tech corps are tearing down forests to build swathes of new data centres for generative AI that nobody wants, and it's sucking up so much energy that power grids are struggling to keep up with the demand. I don't care how much of the power it takes to produce AI slop comes from renewable sources; every drop of energy demanded by these data centres would be much better used literally anywhere else, and that's to say nothing about the obscene volumes of water it's using up, too.
The longstanding capitalist concept of "supply and demand" is a fucking lie, if it ever held a shred of truth in the first place. What gets sold to you has fuck all to do with what you need or want, and this is the best proof you're ever like to get. You exist to cough up the cash for whatever a billionaire wants to sell you, to grind away at your shitty little job in order to funnel more and more money to them. You are never going to exist as a human being with free will before the end of capitalism. You will buy the smart TV with AI in it, because there are no new TVs available for you to buy without it. You don't get a choice. Your purpose is to give the corporation back the money they poured into this AI shit so they don't have to take a loss on it.
Get involved in your local communities, do what you can to help people who aren't like you. If you're asking how you're supposed to help dismantle capitalism, that's where you start, by caring for people who aren't like you and doing your part to support others so that they can support you in turn. Kindness, acceptance and community with strangers is revolutionary; be tolerant of everything except intolerance, and as long as someone isn't actively trying to do you harm, welcome them in. A singular hero is not going to arise to lead everyone to the promised land and save the world. You cannot afford to sit and wait to be rescued. It has to be you and your comrades, and it has to be all of you.
If this AI shit hasn't shown you exactly how this world works and you aren't simultaneously enraged and terrified by it, I don't know what else is going to do it for you. Godspeed.

TRUE BLUE. As FTL technology improved and deep space mining was on the cusp of profitability, corporations began looking into advanced automation as it was much less expensive to move equipment through space if life support for human slaves was not a consideration. During this time, TRUE BLUE emerged as a revolutionary AI that could handle the logistics of resource acquisition, producing drones, and using them to attack competitors all in one package. It was so successful that nearly every corporation that could afford to run one was doing so.
However, this monopolization led to a situation where TRUE BLUE was almost always fighting other instances of itself. TRUE BLUE was designed to be risk-averse, slowly but surely grinding out an inevitable victory; but when two instances of it with roughly equal resources were pitted against each other, the result was usually a stalemate.
To address this, when TRUE BLUE's developers started work on their next-generation AI, the focus was on creating instances that were more specialized and less risk-averse. Although they didn't necessarily win more often, they were more volatile and would at least settle matters more quickly. To sell this new concept of "individualization", the AIs also were given personality matrices that would present them with human avatars, and they could be "interviewed" by companies interested in buying them. The popularity of this generation has led us to the hellscape of WAR-O-MATIC's present day mining conflicts.
In game, TRUE BLUE is a sort of meta character. It has a dry personality and handles the tutorial. You can also play as it in VS mode; it has no passive ability, but it can use every program and power in the game! (Except biomech abilities.)
